Faith in God is central to the thinking of common Indians. This faith has given our culture an ability to survive innumerable calamities that have befallen us over several millennia. The soothing idea that an almighty God is eventually in-charge of our world provides relevance to our lives. The things we do not understand can be ascribed to the unfathomable design of the creator. Indian thinkers however never ceased to question this whole concept and in their quest of knowledge, reached the ultimate philosophy of Vedanta. Vedantic concept of Brahman is closer to the modern scientific ideas of creation of matter and evolution of life. For common people however, the faith in an almighty God remains necessary to make a sense of their lives in relation to the world that may otherwise appear quite absurd.
