I recently visited Jhansi and as I am a great admirer or Rani Laxmibai, I went to see her palace, Jhansi Fort and museum. In the museum, I found a very nice poetry book related to the first freedom fight of 1857. In this book I found a truly remarkable poem in Bhojpuri, that immediately reminded me of Shyam Narayan Pandey’s immortal poem Haldighati. The poem is about the movement of Bihari rebel soldiers in the English army, under the leadership of warrior Kunwar Singh. Excerpts from this poem are given here. Even if you do not know Bhojpuri well, it is worth reading this poem for the sheer force of expression. Read it out loud! Rajiv Krishna Saxena
